NightPaw

It was that icy, frigid time in the middle of the leaf-bare that reminded the black-furred feline of his bitter past and history. The blinding blizzard knew no mercy, in fact, it had never known mercy when it sent its piercing needles of ice from StarClan many moons ago. One by one they fell, stabbing the fragile, body of an abandoned kit like the thorns on a thicket. The poor kit had meowed desperately for its mother, but she never came; she wasn't able to. Her hopeless limp body laid in a pool of blood in a distance, staining the pure white snow until it turned into a hue of pink.

NightPaw winced at the memory of his dead mother and how she had so eagerly given up her life in return of his. She loved him dearly, he knew. And perhaps she was the only cat that ever did and ever will. With a sign, the apprentice absentmindedly lifted his head while his emerald gaze scanned across his surroundings.

The snowy white she-cat cheerfully padded in, her dark brown ears pricked. She spotted the apprentice, and she stumbled to him, tripping over a rock. "Hi! Aren't you NightPaw?" She exclaims, sniffing him curiously. "I'm SnowStreak!"

An unknown force suddenly slammed onto his flank, interrupting his thoughts which brought him back to reality. With annoyance, NightPaw whirled around to face the cat as a growl threatened to escape his throat. His irritated expression softened slightly when he saw that it was only a she-cat that meant no harm. He kept his guard, his past had taught him an unforgettable lesson to trust no one but himself.

Refusing to let her notice his untrusting and cynical behavior, NightPaw put on flirtatious smile and meowed, "Hello there, SnowStreak, I've seen you around the camp before. What are you doing out here? Hunting? Well it's the middle leafbare so I doubt you'd have any luck."

The snowy she cat revealed a warm smile, simply shrugging. "At least I could try, right?" She replied, flicking her ears. "There must be some prey around. And, I seen you around camp, too!" She lightly flicked here ear, "You always seem quiet, though." She cocked her head and lightly swiped at his ears, "Want to hunt with me? We could catch more prey with teamwork!"

He gave her a curt nod and grumbled, "I'm only quiet because I barely know anyone in ValiantClan. I used to be caged by myself by Upwalkers* in a place that they call "The Pound". But then, I escaped. Obviously. But please don't tell anyone," NightPaw pleaded her, "I don't want our Clanmates to think I'm 'weird' or 'odd' because of this."

At the mention of hunting, the feline heaved himself up, grinning with anticipation and excitement. This was the first time that he had been offered to go hunting with another cat. A she-cat. "Sure", NightPaw replied as he turned and bounded into the evergreen forest, flicking his tail as a signal for him to follow him.

"Well, you know ME now!" She pawed herself, "So be loud around me as much as you want! Oh, don't worry about it." She flicked her ears absent-mindly. "That was your past. Not now. Perfect! We'll catch lots and lots of prry!" The snowy white she cat bounded after him, excitedly.

NightPaw stopped in the center of the forest to catch his breath. Snow had began to fall, creating a thin blanket of white that covered the evergreens in the Pines. It was that moment, right there and right now that NightPaw wished would last forever and time would stop moving; just him SnowStreak in this magnificent wonderland. Deep down, he knew that they would probably catch next to no prey in this freezing weather. What could possibly force an animal to leave the safety of its burrow and exposed itself to danger? Desperation? Hunger? "Where could we find prey?" he asked the she-cat, hoping that she would know since she's more familiar with the territory than he is.

"Good point," she meowed, pawing his ears lightly. "Well, we should search for burrows and hide in the trees! Plus, there should be something similar to food for the prey. Seeds, maybe?" She cocked her head, thoughtfully. She moved foward, her ears flattened. She parted her jaws, frowning. Then, her eyes brightened up as she prodded NightPaw. "NightPaw! A mouse!" She breathed, looking at the scrawny mouse. "I'll chase it to you," she murmurs in his ear, revealing a warm smile. She sneaked up to the scrawny mouse and let out a loud meow, batting her paws at it to NightPaw's way. The scrawny mouse ran to NightPaw's way.

He got into a hunter's crouch, ready to pounce at the soon-to-be freshkill. Suddenly, an unexpected yowl sounded from a distance, scaring the mouse away. NightPaw opened his muzzle to taste the chilly air. He tasted an unfamiliar scent, yet it was familiar to him in a way he could not comprehend himself. It was definitely something he had smelled before, or otherwise he would had easily disregarded it in the strong scent of evergreens that masked its nearly indistinguishable smell.

Though NightPaw had no idea of what the smell was, there was a tugging sensation inside him that told him it posed a danger to both him and Snowstreak. Now isn't the time to stay frozen in your pawsteps like a mousebrain! the voice in his head scolded him. Run! But NightPaw could not move. The scent brought back painful memories of his mother...and blood. "Do you smell it?" he absentmindly asked Snowstreak, his meow a croaked whisper that was filled with pain and confusion. His emerald gaze was solemn as he slowly turned his head to her, waiting for her answer.
