Training BrightPaw

FleckMist padded into the Sandy Hollow, looking back behind her with kind amber eyes to check whether BrightPaw was following her. She turned around in the middle of the hollow and spoke, "This is where we will train you for combat and hunting lessons. Can I see your hunting crouch?" She asked.

Brightpaw nodded eagerly and tried her best to remember how'd she'd seen her mom do it while she was a loner kit. The calico apprentice dropped down to the ground crouching, her tail somewhat low and high in the air, and alll her weight on her front paws. "Like this?" She asked.

FleckMist chuckles, remembering her first lesson as an apprentice. "Almost. You just need to balance your left side a little." She demonstrates, lowering herself down and keeping the weight off of her front paws, so she has more power when she leaps.

Brightpaw nodded, immediately understanding what she had done wrong; her paws were screaming for her to stop putting them under pressure. She slowly let her weight of her paws, biting back a sigh of relief. Her body in the right position now, she looked up at her mentor, going over to see if she had the posture right. After agreeing with herself, the calico apprentice finally asked: "Like this?"

FleckMist nodded, pride overwhelming her. "Next I'm going to show you how to combine that move with a stalk. Watch carefully." The black and white she crouched into a hunting stance, and slowly began to pull herself forwards. Her paws were silent, and as she came up she asked BrightPaw whether she could do it.

"I'll try!" Brightpaw mewed. Slowly, the new apprentice placed one paw after another on the ground, putting only the tiniest amount of pressure for each step.

FleckMist smiles. "Good, very good!" She praises, then settles herself down for a lesson. "Now, when you're creeping up on a mouse, what does it5 hear first? Your scent or your feet?"

Brightpaw smiled back at Fleckmist. "It would probally smell me first, right?" She asked, unsure of her answer.

FleckMist nodded, and asked the best way to approach the mouse. The rabbit was opposite, and birds you just have to rely on stealth to catch.

"Like this?" Brightpaw asked, getting back into the crouch she was in earlier. She spotted a leaf lying on the ground. She slowly stalked up to it, and pounced.

FleckMist nodded to BrightPaw. She was so full of enthusiasm! "Do you want to try your technique out in a real mouse?" She askrd.

Brightpaw nodded eagerly, swishing her tail back and forth in excitement. I need to make sure to hunt everyday as much as I can. This Clan won't go hungry as long as I'm here! Brightpaw decided to show Fleckmist what she already knew, by tasting the air. She had learned it as kit, while she was a loner. She remembered always looking for her sister by sniffing her out. She would do the same with the mouse. Immediately, the slightest scent of mouse came in contact with her pink nose. "I can smell one, Fleckmist! I can smell one! It's over... There!" Brightpaw pointed with her tail in the direction the mouse scent was coming from.
