Wolf Roleplay Information for GBMP

- Please note, this Roleplay style is not exactly the same to actual wolf roleplay, it has twists and small alterations to make it easier for us roleplayers to roleplay as wolves. The twists and storylines were created for GBMP usage only.

Included in this thread are the following;

■ Accepted wolf breeds.
■ Wolf Pack Rankings.
■ Basic information.
■ How wolves work.
■  Maturity.
■ Facts
■ Pregnancy.

- Continued on another comment but still in this thread;

■ The Legend.
■ Terms and Beliefs.
■ The Wolf Code.

Acceptable wolf breeds

Click image to enlarge to see the comparison between wolf sizes.

Grey wolves

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Grey wolves are the largest wolf breed, with male wolves averaging around  43–45 kg (95–99 lb), and female wolves averaging around 36–38.5 kg (79–85 lb). These wolves have the appearance of a "sled dog", except have a larger head, larger paws and longer legs. Grey wolves have thick, shaggy winter fur which varies from a  mottled grey in color to an almost white, blonde, browns and blacks. Females tend to have more red in their pelts than males.

Arctic wolves

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

A subspecies of the grey wolf, with white fur and large white teeth. Arctic wolves are usually smaller than gray wolves and also have smaller ears, slightly shorter muzzles, and shorter legs to reduce exposure to air. They are usually all white with a very thick, insulating coat.

Mexican wolves

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Another subspecies to the grey wolf, almost extinct and critically endangered. They are the smallest of the grey wolf subspecies, being around the size of a German Shepherd. The pelt colorations contains a mix of grey, brown, russet, and black with white underparts. These wolves have long legs and run fast.

Eurasian wolves

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Eurasian wolves tend to have longer, more highly placed ears, narrower heads, more slender loins and coarser, tawnier coloured fur. Eurasian wolves have shorter, denser fur than their North American relatives. Their size varies according to region, although adults measure 30 inches (76 centimetres) at the shoulder and weigh around 70 - 130 pounds (32 - 59 kilograms), with females usually being about twenty per cent smaller than males.

Tundra wolves

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It is a large subspecies of the grey wolf, with adult males measuring 118-137 cm (46-54 inches) in length, and females 112-136 cm (44-54 inches). Tail length in males is 42-52 cm (17-20 in), in females it is 41-49 cm (16-19 in). Although often written to be larger than grey wolves, this is untrue, as heavier grey wolves have been recorded. Their fur is very long and soft. Their fur is usually a very light and grey in color. However, you do get black Tundra wolves like the image above.

Pack ranks

Alpha and Alphess➥ Must be mates. Male and female. They lead the pack, they are in charge of the pack. There are two wolves at all times, but, these are of course mates. They are vital members to the pack and often are in charge of punishments and stripping ranks. These wolves are to get the HIGHEST of respect, if not, it could result in a rank strip.

Beta pair ➥ The Beta mated pair are chosen by the Alpha and Alphess. They are usually a Delta or Guardian, but have been promoted if the Beta rank is free. In order to be a Beta, the wolf must have a mate who will become the Beta Female or Male. The wolf chosen by the Alpha and Alphess has the "majority" of power and if they are demoted, their mate is also demoted. They are right-paw to the alphas and must follow the rules, leading an example behind their leaders. Betas are highly respected and do have the ability to dish out punishments to the other wolves within the pack.

Deltas➥ Only two of these are selected and are chosen by the Alphas themselves. They do not have to be in an intimate relationship to be selected for this rank. They're fairly respected members of the pack and are imperative for the packs safety and security. They are third in command of the pack.

Guardians➥ There are two of these at all times and DO NOT have to be mates. They are the alphas sole protectors and are usually at their side all the time, unless directed elsewhere. They are also fairly respected. In the event of a large battle or war, these wolves stay by the alphas side and protect them, risking their lives for the Alphas.

Shaman➥ Spiritual/medicine wolf. They do use the same herbal list as medicine cats.

Subordinate wolf ranks

Scouts➥ (A soldier wolf) These wolves patrol the pack territory often and fight trespassers. They also are the first wolves called on for a battle if one occurs. Scouts and Sentinels are equally ranked. Wolves use very similar tactics to the warrior cats. Battle tactics can be found in the Ultimate Warrior cat Guide.

Sentinels➥ These wolves have two duties, to guard and to hunt. They hunt for half of the day/sunrise and then guard/patrol the territory the remaining sector of it. Scouts and Sentinels are equally ranked.

Elders➥ Retired wolves. These wolves are respected within the pack and are fed before the leading pairs.

Expecting she-wolf➥ Basically what the title says. A female, regardless of rank who is carrying. nursing or caring for pups.

Lowest wolf ranks

Pups➥ Pups of the pack.

Omegas➥ The lowest rank of the wolf pack. Often outcasts or wolves who were born to a traitor. These wolves have no respect and are the last to eat within the pack. They also sleep outside the entrance to the Cave. Many wolves packs contain one or a few omega wolves which may be appear to be mistreated by other pack members. Such wolves often avoid the other members of the pack.

Basic and useful information

Wolves cannot have blue eyes. Its impossible. However, albinism is possible since it's a genetic mutation. "Very young cubs have blue eyes, as you know, but these change colour as they get older. An old wolf that has cataracts may appear to have blue eyes, but this is the cataract rather than the actual eye colour. There are three species of wolf - the grey wolf (Canis lupus), the species most people think of when they hear the word 'wolf', the red wolf (Canis rufus), and the Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis). Red and Ethiopian wolves' eyes are invariably brown. Grey wolves' eyes may be brown, yellow, orange or pale green. Sometimes the pale green ones can appear blue from certain angles or in certain lights. It is remotely possible that a wolf could turn up with blue eyes due to some genetic defect." But, seeing as wolves do not generally have blue eyes, we will not accept it.

How Wolves Work?

The alpha male and female have a strong relationship - the strongest in the pack, but it becomes stronger as they produce pups. Once they are established as a breeding pair (mates), they often stay together for life, although infrequent changes in partners may occur. It is untrue that wolves always mate for life, though wolves typically only have one mate at a time. Males often become very protective of their mate when she is expecting or carrying pups. When the female or male alpha dies, their partner may find it harder to keep their status as alpha and will usually lose it unless they can find a mate. (We will be reasonable with 'finding a new mate' as it is not always your fault if your mate happens to go inactive or has to quit for reasons :3)

When pups are able to leave the den, the pups become the responsibility of the whole pack. Each wolf in the pack will protect the pups, and will watch out for possible predators (such as eagles or bears) that may attack the pups. The pups spend much of their time playing by chasing and wrestling with each other. They will constantly try the patience of the older wolves by nipping at their ears and tails and by pouncing on them. Adult wolves are very patient with the pups and will only reprimand them by bearing their teeth if the play becomes too rough. In real wolf packs, wolves have many relationships with other wolves in order to produce pups and usually each pack will only produce one litter. However, for this particular roleplay, that will not be the case. Any female wolf within the pack is able to produce pups and if they are wishing to have relationships with other wolf characters while they are mated, they will need to inform an admin in OOC just to ensure it is okay.

Wolves reached maturity/adulthood at 2 years old.

When pups mature and reach a particular age, they will be introduced to potential prey, different scents and trails, and hunting strategies. Wolf pups start to accompany adults on hunting trips when they are 12 weeks old. This means that the wolf pups do not have an official mentor and therefore do not have an official ceremony like in warrior cat RP. They will be told by the alpha or alphas when they have reached their age and be invited onto hunting trips - (this is called the invitation and is the equivalent to an 'apprentice ceremony' and pups who have recieved their invitation become a Rendezvous Pup (Basically a pup in training, mainly referred to as just a pup, though) The pups will start to explore their surroundings on their own, and at age 7-8 months, they will start to actively hunt with the pack. Some pups will eventually leave their pack and will become lone wolves (dispersers), however, this number is rare.

A branch off from this, is aging.
Since wolves take longer than cats to mature, it will be shown through Roleplay, as well. Wolves will wait a two weeks - a month real life time before receiving their invitation (the "12 week" rule may be longer due to leadership, the pup capability or issues within the pack) Two weeks into that, the pup can then begin to explore and hunt on the territory by themselves. It is then an extra two months before the pup becomes a full grown adult and can become a sentinel or scout.

HINT; If your wolf is faced with a battle, you can use warrior cat battle techniques which are found in the "Ultimate warrior cat guide"

A wolf howl can last anywhere from 3 to 11 seconds.

In chases, the wolf can achieve estimated speeds of between 28 and 40 miles per hour for up to 20 minutes.

Packs can have as little as 2 members or as many as 30 members. Average Pack size is 6 to 8. When a wolf becomes separated from his pack, it howls. The other members of his pack respond, giving him a sound to guide him home.

The bond between pack members is so close that observers have recorded that the death of one engenders an evident sense of loss among the survivors.

The gestation period for a wolf is 63 days. The average litter size is 4 to 6 cubs.

Young pups and their mothers will often stay in the Birthing Den. Mothers will usually give birth there and care for her pups there - without any males present, until the pup is around 10 weeks old. When the pup is around 10 weeks old, the pup moves to the rendezvous den (equivalent to 'apprentice den') and their mother returns to her usual duty. It is when the pup reaches 12 weeks old that they are invited to learn and hunt with the adult wolves. This invitation can only be done by the Alphas, however, a PM to them, informing your age is useful. That's right, there is no rank 'apprentice' it is 'pup' until the pup is 2 years old.

Wolf History

The Legend.
Terms and Beliefs.
The Wolf Code.

The Way of the Wolf

Before the humans, before the cats, there were two first Gods. Akela and Freki. Akela, a beautiful snowy white wolf with lime green eyes - The Wolf God of Land. Freki with dark grey fur and rough white paw pads - The Wolf God of Ocean. These two wolves were the first of the Wolf God's. These two wolves loved each other very much and created the forests, the streams, the land which creatures now roam on, the rules in which packs are run. Akela and Freki had a litter of pups - two pups were produced. One female and one male. The females name was Sköll, a beautiful snow white wolf - the Wolf that brought peace, harmony and love to the forest. The Wolf God of Life. The male wolf was Ulric - a dark, shaggy black wolf with dark yellow eyes. Ulric was the wolf who brought darkness and bitterness to the forest. The Wolf God of Death. Ulric was unkind and rude, he hungered to have power like his parents and was extremely jealous of his sister, Sköll, who his parents adored with all their heart.

One night, Ulric - who was consumed with jealousy, crept into his sister's cave in attempt to poison her. Ulric felt that if she were out of the way, his parents would give him all the power and that he could take over the forest. When Ulric arrived in Sköll's cave, he discovered her sleeping in a nest. Ulric approached her and dropped a poisonous hind leg of a caribou at her paws, hoping that in the morning, when the sun rose, she would eat the caribou leg.

Before the sun rose, Ulric went out hunting as he hoped to impress his parents with a large kill and to cheer them up about the death of his sibling. But, much to Ulric's surprise, when he arrived back at the Cave with his kill, his sister was much alive and well. She thanked him for the prey he had left her that morning and padded away. Little did Ulric know that Sköll could smell the poison off the prey and had disposed of it before anyone could eat it. Ulric became filled with confusion, he could not understand how his sister possibly consumed the poison yet was alive. The fact that she was alive made Ulric angry and he became set on killing his sister - no matter the price. Ulric repeatedly attempted to poison his sister, dropping toxic prey into her den every morning. Yet, no matter how much prey he dropped into his sisters nest, she continued to be healthy.

Ulric felt he was being tricked and decided to try a new plan. A plan that he knew would work. As the sun fell behind the clouds and the moon rose into the sky, the howls of the night's hunt echoed through the forest. It was night, and during the night, nearly all the wolves go out to hunt. Ulric knew that only a few wolves had stayed back at the Cave - his sister being one of them. Sköll would often sit by the entrance to the Cave, watching the stars in the sky. Ulric knew this well and went to the entrance of the Cave.

The she-wolf's flowing snow white fur was shining like a star in the moonlight. Ulric did not hesitate, he hurled his well-muscled body at the wolf, snapping his crocodile-like jaws at her, his dark midnight colored claws slashed at her neck. The she-wolf went limp in Ulric's grasp, her pelt now scarlet red. Ulric stepped back and watched the she-wolf fall to the ground, lying in her own pool of blood. Ulric's thoughts were interrupted by the sharp ringing of Sköll's voice in his ears, "What have you done!? You have killed our mother!" It was then that Ulric had turned around and saw his sister behind him, it was then that he realized he had mistook his very own mother for his sister. When Freki, the two wolves' father arrived at the Cave and learned of what Ulric had done, he attacked his son but Ulric fought back which resulted in both of the male wolves being severely injured. Their injuries were so extensive that both ended up dying due to blood loss. But, moments before Freki's death, he granted his powers to his daughter, Sköll - to protect and look after the forest.

Terms and Beliefs

Most wolves believe in the Legend. It is how they have thought to come to be. Those wolves who are non-believers do not really have a belief system or have never heard of the Legend. All wolves brought up within the pack will learn the Legends. But, the God they chose to worship is entirely their choice. The Pack is ran in accordance to the God of Life (like how clans are ran in accordance to StarClan and the warrior code), however, lone wolves can live their life in accordance to the God of Death.

Sky Wolves - Deceased Wolf Ancestors who were good. (Like StarClan Cats)
Skies - Considered 'Heaven' or 'Home' to the Sky Wolves. (Like actual StarClan)

The Night Walkers - Deceased Wolf Ancestors who were evil. (Like DarkForest Cats) They do not have a "Heaven" or "Home" and are thought to be trapped in their body to suffer for all they have done. (It is thought that if a wolf died due to severe wounds, that they still feel their pain. Whereas a Sky Wolf would be healed of all wounds and injuries)

The Wolf God of the Forest - Akela. The first Wolf God. The one that created it all.
The Wolf God of the Oceans - Freki. The first Wolf God. The one that created it all.

The Wolf God of Life - Sköll. Wolves who worship the God of Life are healthy, happy and content wolves who when they decease, they become a Sky Wolf. These wolves follow the code and obey it religiously.

The Wolf God of Death - Ulric. Considered very evil, dark and hated by many. Wolves who worship the God of Death are thought to become a Night Walker when they die. It is assumed that these wolves live a very miserable afterlife when they die. These wolves do not follow the code and have very little regard and respect for those who do follow it.

Lupe - Often a term used for a lower ranked male wolf.
Lupa - Often a term used for a lower ranked female wolf.

Kingdom - A term used mostly by the Alpha and Alphess as they define their territory as theirs.

Like in Warrior Cats; Sky Wolves and Night Walkers can come to the Wolves (Shaman's or Alphas) in dreams or omens. They can also help warn of danger or cause distress or nightmares for living Wolves.

GBMP Wolf Celebrations and Festivals

There is the Legend of how the wolves began with Ulric, Akela, Freki and Sköll. However, there are also other wolves which are "Demi-Gods" to the story. Akela and Freki, the ones who started it all were considered Gods. The two of the first, the wolf Gods who created it all. Their two children, Ulric and Sköll were also two Gods, the God of life and the God of death. Included in this legend were also Demi-Gods, while their roles were not as important as the first Gods, they were still there and there are still celebrations surrounding these Gods.

Moon Festival
The moon festival happens every month, when the full moon takes its form in the sky. The moon festival is popular within the pack. Wolves who are lone-wolves do not usually celebrate the Moon Festival, but may, if they are a believer. The moon festival is where wolves within the pack, gather together and howl to the moon as a celebration of life. The wolves share stories, myths and tales of the Gods  amongst other  activities and games such as pack hunts, pack competitions and play-fights. The wolves who celebrate the moon festival also have a feast the night the moon takes position on the sky. All wolves within the pack, from Alpha through to Omega is required to participate in the moon festival and the feast unless they are considered ill by the Shaman.

The Day of The Dead - Ulric's Festival
Either name is acceptable, but those who are believers often find that "Ulric's festival" is too harsh to say.. This day happens once a year and is a day which the wolves, regardless of if they are believers or not, honor and respect their deceased ancestors, friends, pack-mates kin and family. It is claimed that on this night, Nightwalkers may try to return and pass their evil knowledge and spirits onto those who are living. The Gods forbid acting up on this one day as Legend states they fear it could lure the Nightwalkers and cause them to return and haunt the living. However, such things have never been sighted. The festival for respecting and honoring the dead starts on the 30th October through to the 1st of November.

Ravinto, aka "Sustenance" from The Demi-God, Nanook (the Demi-God of fresh prey) is a celebration which lasts a whole week within the pack. The pack spend around a week celebrating this festival. They howl to the Demi-Gods and Gods, thanking them for the prey they have provided them throughout the season and form large hunting teams and try to gather as much prey as possible to bring back to the Cave. This festival is a time for thanking the Gods and consuming as much prey as possible. The festival occurs at the start of every new season.

Ignis arcum or "Ignis Festival"
The Ignis Festival (Basically known to us as a Fire Rainbow) is a festival which happens twice, sometimes three times a year. The Alpha and Alphess are notified ahead of time by the Sky-Wolves of the arrival of the Ignis Festival. These festivals are valued and all wolves within the pack thoroughly enjoy these festivals. A few days ahead of the festival, the hunting teams will hunt as much prey as possible for a large feast. When the Ignis festival begins, all wolves within the pack gather together and watch the wonders in the sky. Afterwards, they feast, play games, tell stories and legends. Legends say that the Ignis festival may perhaps be two Demi-Gods, fighting; the God of Water and the God of Fire. The two fighting and arguing, this causing a large red appearing storm.

The Demi-Gods

Nanook - The God of Fresh Prey. It can be sometimes heard to thank "Nanook" or the "Gods" for providing such lush prey during seasons.
Ignis - The God of Fire.
Aqua - The God of Water.
Amor - The God of Love. It is not unheard of to hear wolves speak of Amor when speaking to their mate, friend, pack-mates or loved ones.
Robur - The God of Strength. It is said wolves who fight with a great deal of strength and excellence are wolves like Robur.

The Code

→ Wolves within a pack cannot fall in love or have pups with a pack outsider. If the wolf is female, her father will usually kill the outsider male. (Get OOC permission first as this could result in power-playing and god-modding)

→ The alpha male and female must be the oldest members of the pack meaning they are the ones with the most experience in hunting and defending territory.

→ All pack members are to respect the Alphas and their word.

→ All wolves within a pack are expected to care and take turns looking after pups within the pack. Not just the pups parents.

→ The Alphas eat first, then the remainder of the pack.

→ All trespassers are to be killed and/or attacked.

→ The Shaman cannot have a mate nor produce any pups. They must be dedicated to their their role of communicating with the Sky Wolves.
