Robinpaw spotted Howlingstar at the fringes of the training hollow. She shook her head, giving a dignified ripple to her gray ruff before approaching him. "G'morning," she mewed.

HowlingStar purred like thunder, his head was tilt up to the sky. "It's getting colder," he said before fixing his gaze on his apprentice. "Now," he said, with a smile. "Lets start. Show me your hunters crouch."

Robinpaw nodded wordlessly at his remark about the weather. It was true, the air was cooling down and leaves were beginning to fall. His purring was loud, Robinpaw noticed before she dropped into a crouch. "Like this?" She asked, though she was fairly sure her stance was correct. Her shoulder blades were touching and she was ready to spring, her tail held still above the ground as to not give away her position.

The leader examined her crouch before signalling a nod with a smile. "Very good," he said. "What can you scent?" The leader's jaws were parted as he tasted the air.

Robinpaw let her mouth fall open a little, sucking in a breath and letting it tickle the scent glands on the roof of her mouth. There was a warm scent, both musky and nutty. "Squirrel," she barely breathed the word, her ears swiveling to try and find the scritching noises of the animal climbing a tree or scampering across the ground.

The leader tilt his head in the direction of the scent, "Good," he said. "Squirrels are interesting to catch," he said, "You will need to rely on your agility in order to catch them. When pouncing, you must be sure to judge your distance carefully, otherwise you will be likely to miss." HowlingStar's purr faded into a weak, barely audible sound. "Keep yourself low to the ground, don't make a sound, step lightly by shifting your weight to your hind legs." He began to smile, "Give it a try."

Robinpaw nodded, fearful of saying anything that might break her building concentration. You've got this, Robin, said a voice in her head, its tone determined. She would not get this wrong. She would catch this squirrel. She shifted her weight back, her tail still carefully lofted above the ground. The pupils in her wide green eyes opened like dark pits, swallowing the color around them as the squirrel came into view. You've got this, the voice said again, and upon the realization it was hers, Robinpaw sprung, using her back legs to take off and her front as a control factor. The squirrel looked up, tiny black eyes terrified, but it was too late. Robinpaw was already soaring toward it with outstretched claws.

Half-expecting to miss, Robinpaw almost let it wriggle lose when she snared it in her claws. Almost, but not quite. She dug her claws in deeper and it let out a squeak, which she promptly cut off by snapping its neck with her teeth.

The leader leaned his large body forward, attempting to get a closer peak of the apprentice and her kill. "Good save," he said, "A noise like that could and would startle the prey." The leader rose to his paws and praised his apprentice with a gentle lick on the forehead. "That was an excellent first kill. However, now, I want for you to try and kill a mouse or a bird. Not all prey has the same tactic involved. Mice and birds both have very sharp hearing and do not really rely heavily on your speed. But, birds are prone to take flight so you must be prepared to jump."

Robinpaw nodded, assuming that his comment was criticism with a stony acceptance. She could deal with criticism, after all, it was constructive. How else would she progress? A good save wouldn't have been needed if she hadn't almost blown it. The lick to her forehead was startling and she almost flinched away--almost, but not quite. "Thank you," she mewed, doing her best to sound dignified. Though she knew he didn't mean it to, his next comment did make her flinch away. It was a good first kill. Her first kill, at nine moons. She glanced away, her mouth open, pretending to check for scents when really she was just composing herself. "I don't smell anything nearby," she mewed and looked back at him, once again stony and dignified. "You?"

The leader parted his jaws and swiveled his ears forward; listening. "In the trees," he said, gazing up into the tree.
